YIRRA YAAKIN THEATRE COMPANY RIDING A WAVE OF SUCCESS INTO 2012
Yirra Yaakin values your support.
Here's how to get involved:
DUSK SONG was our final major production for the year and involved performances in Clontarf, Kwinana and Balga over a three week period. All three shows carried a message about Responsible Drinking. The plays involved singing, circus skills, dance and acting. All three plays were written by the participants and all shows were well attended. The headmaster from Medina Primary School was amazed that some of the more troublesome students from his school were the main performers in the play. The project was in part sponsored by the Commonwealth Department of Human Services and Health.

Our Northern suburbs community show was the culmination of a number of workshops in puppetry by Miguel Cayazaya. This show was directed by Warren Collard and assisted by Tammy Clarke. The show was again a lot of fun and very creative. The story line was written by the Koondoola group and the puppetry was also performed by them.

THE BIRD was workshopped at the end of 1994 with the Kwinana workshop group. At the beginning of April it toured to the Come Out Festival in Adelaide where it was staged at the Tandanya Aboriginal Cultural Centre. On returning to Perth there was a general public season at PICA as well as a school matinee. Overall the project was successful with some positive changes in attitude from some of the cast members noted by a number of parents and Aboriginal Education Workers. The production had two adult professional performers as part of the cast - Lynette Narkle and Jim Webb.

THE RUNAWAYS was a community show aimed at presenting Aboriginal theatre in a less intimidating manner. The play was a Noongar version of Hansel and Gretel and was a lot of fun to be involved in. The play was written by the Bentley/Karawara group and was performed at the Big Kitchen at Clontarf. There was also one performance at Bentley Primary school.
This was our other major production for the year and Lynette’s first opportunity to work with Yirra Yaakin as Director. THE WAYARNING was written by the Midland workshop group and dealt with the subject of Aboriginal foster children. THE WAYARNING was performed at the Studio in Subiaco, Don Russell PAC in Gosnells and the Kwinana Arts Centre. There was also a government workers’ matinee at Subiaco aimed at raising the awareness of Yirra Yaakin amongst funding bodies. The shows were well attended and we were also privileged in having Dot Collard playing a lead role in the play. The project was made possible with the financial assistance of Sally Morgan.
